Well, it all started when we wanted to redo the siding on the house.
There isn't any nice way to tie in the window, roof line, and the corner. That's when we decided to add onto the porch. |
|
April 3rd, Day one:We tore into the end to see what we could see. It looked promising? |
|
And every porch needs a good foundation, ours was poured when the house was built.
We found it one year when we were doing the front landscape. That makes the job easier! |
|
We added some temporary supports to hold the roof up, then a quick cut with Mark's diamond tipped demolition saw, got the job rolling
We just gave it a push, and it was all over but the cleanup!
There is an inner and outer wall. We want to keep the outer wall, so we had to work slow on removing the inner.
A few bricks removed from the top left the rest of the arch ready to go too.
Look out below! |
|
What a mess! Check back soon!
Day 2: The roof was supported by the arch. With that gone, we needed to add some support. We shored up both sides, and cut a slot to put the bury a beam into.
With the posts and beam in place, we can take down the temporary supports.
The front post is temporary, until the porch cap is poured. The one in back is pressure treated and will stay. |
|
A bit messy, but it's starting to look like a porch again!
It didn't seem like we accomplished much today, although I did get the plans over to the building department for a permit
and made a few trips to the lumber yard for supplies.
I did get another post ready for the new roof, that's tomorrow! |
|
Day 3: The beam for the new roof section is in place. It's time to learn about cutting roof rafters
That wasn't so bad, but I can't seem to get the new roof sections to plane out with the old stuff
It seems the overhang has settled a bit, we'll need to fix that. |
|
Day 4: I tore a bit more off of the front. Now I can get everything into alignment.
I got the call at noon, the roofing crew will be here at 1:30, and I'd better get the materials ordered! |
|
Sure enough! They showed at 1:35.
Rick and Freddy finished nailing the sheeting on the new roof, while "Gee" (The 'G' in MGD) and Jeremy get the "eyebrows" off. The roofing materials are due at 3:30 and it looks like rain! |
|
The roofing truck shows up on time. They off load 26 square of shingles for us to put down.
Roof top delivery is wonderful! |
|
A few hours later, it threatens rain, so we decide not to chance a disaster.
We tarp it off the eyebrow wounds, and head for home. |
|
Day 5: 7:30 the next morning, I see the crew in the driveway.
We staged the MGD truck as close a possible, and started tearing off the upper roof. As soon as it was swept clean, we started shooting down the new shingles. It was sprinkling too hard to continue with the rest of the tear off. |
|
Day 6: Mark (the 'M' in MGD) called in reinforcements. We had 8 guys on the roof today.
The back side of the upper story was stripped clean, while 3 guys roofed that, the rest of us stripped the remainder of the house and garage. |
|
A view from the backside. It took a bit of doing to get around all of the projections through the roof, but they did a great job!
We had great weather and a busy day, but we didn't finish it all. The porch and part of the garage are left open to tomorrow. |
|
Day 6: Saturday, bright and early, Mark and my dad stop over to get the show going again.
We worked around the 2 skylight on the front, and finished roofing the porch and garage too.
It was getting too hot to do the ridge vents today, the roof was getting mushy. |
|
Sunday: We let the neighbors sleep until
9:00 or so, and then we got the roof vents put on. The rest of the day was cleanup!
Not too shabby for 7 days of work, Siding and trim are next! |
|
During the week, Mike and I started to break up the old porch cap. We hung blankets in front of the glass to protect it.
We found the bricks under the porch all broken and loose. Everything had to come out, down to the foundation! |
|
The project got a bit bigger than we bargained for, we decided to let a real mason rebuild the new wall for us.
Saturday morning, Kenny and his son Eric stopped over to fix us up. |
|
By 2:00 they were done. We couldn't do much until the mortar setup.
Sunday: Mike and I got out there and started smashing up the leftover bricks and cement into smaller pieces.
We backfilled the area under the porch cap with the rubble, then covered it with sand. |
|
I can't believe we got all of that concrete in there!
It's starting to look a little better, isn't it?
The next weeks, we had the guys from Cousin's Stamped Concrete out to pour the cap.
I'm starting on their website for them |
|
These guys handled everything! I didn't know what to do? Carol saw me with my hands in my pockets, and couldn't resist.
And again, with my hands in the pockets. Really, I did do some stuff! I notice there isn't any pictures of that?
The gave us an exposed aggregate finish. It looks like time worn concrete, I'll post pictures soon.
With the porch done, the crew showed up for the siding.
Before I could get the camera out, they had the front and side almost stripped clean. |
|
Finished with the prep work, they cleaned up and started the siding.
The front almost done, and the end of the porch just starting
They do it that way to get the siding to line up around the corners. |
|
The front and sides finished, now on to the garage
Before the garage get the siding, I removed the old garage door.
We had Firehouse Door Company install our new door, they did a fine job.
Give them a call 810-599-7480, tell them MGD sent ya! |
|
We're getting close, I installed the new shutters
Now to finish the trim on the bay window
Bay window finished up | |
July 27th, time for gutters and downspouts to finish up the job.
The guys from Allied gutter came out and did a great job! |
