Sunday 11/12 | |
Dick Jim John 2 Denny |
Where's the cook? |
Monday 11/13 | |
Todd Tom John (cookie) Paul |
Greetings and salutations abound.
Although it has been a year since we last saw each other, the abuse and
lack of common respect continues as if it were just yesterday that we were together.
Rain and 40°. Some scouting and blind preparations take place. The deer sign is less than encouraging, but we eagerly await opening day. Poker rears its ugly head. Tom kindly teaches the rookies how to play poker. He does all right this night as the cards are falling his way. |
Tuesday 11/14 | |
Ken Mark no sign of Kent. |
32° and a dusting of snow.
We wake to the sounds of John 2 "I drank 42 beers". We dont know if he is bragging or surprised, but he seems no worse for the experience. The customary "Buck Pool" is started and all but Paul anti-up. His rational is "if I dont get in the pool I am sure to get the biggest buck". The idea is a good one, sadly not an accurate one. Hunt camp 2000 (the Millenium Camp) is truly a "high tech" experience this year. With the advent of "Talkabout" 2-way radios, we are now in contact with the base camp(mobile home) from remote spots in the outlying wilderness. Dinner this night is Venison meatloaf with garlic-mashed potatoes, corn and apple pie ala mode for desert. Once again Cookie shows why he is the best deer camp cook in the county. It is suggested that because Kent is known for his organizational skills and punctuality, we should have a pool to pick the time of his actual arrival on opening day eve. We are all anxious for his arrival as again this year "HE HAS THE KEG". The pool picks for the "Magoo Pool" are: Poker again is the past time of choice as "five card Ken" starts getting hot hands. Just like clockwork, Kent arrives at 11:00p.m. This makes his Dad the "Magoo pool" winner! |
Wednesday 11/15 | |
Opening Day. Temperature is 28°
A 2-inch dusting of fresh snow covers the ground. We awake at 4:00a.m. to the merry melodies of our favorite morning person Tom. After a hearty breakfast prepared by Cookie, we all head out to the swamp with high hopes and great expectations. Dick gets the first deer, a nice doe from the chicken shack.

Thursday 11/16 | |
32° More snow. Wind out of the SSW. Deer moving all over the place.
Mark takes a big buck at the apple tree stand. It used to be a 6 point, but lost two to something bigger. Deer dresses out at 160 lbs. Denny gets a doe. Finally gets to give up title of Vegetarian. Deer runs into cedar swamp and much assistance is needed to drag it out (thanks guys). |

Friday 11/17 | |
31° Snow covered. Everyone is up and out and ready to resume the hunt.
Mark and Denny drive from the sand hill toward the south 80 to try to kick up some deer and start the action. As they reach the end of the ridge along the lake they kick up a 6 point that takes off running toward the chicken shack. This was not a lucky deer. The deer ran along the shoreline directly to Tom who was helping Todd look for a wounded doe. At the distance of 10 yards Tom drops the buck with a snap shot right between the eyes. This bit of Thompson luck springs him past Mark in the buck pool and brings him once again the title of "Buckmaster". Tom drops another deer, an anemic doe (or maybe a big dog), in the north swamp at about 5:00p.m. The last night of deer camp and again poker is the past time of choice. Tom accepts the money from the buck pool and graciously donates his winnings toward the purchase of an automatic feeder for the property. Thanks Tom! |

Saturday 11/18 | |
The diehard hunters return to the wilderness for one last try while the less ambitious head to Hale for breakfast. No deer were taken this last day.
Again deer camp draws to a close. We return to civilization with fond memories and new jokes that will help us get through another year until we can once again return to that palace of the manly arts known as "Deer Camp". |
The camp door we all know and love, this
kind of sums up our camp experience.
Notice in this picture we have the camp grill, the small game and fish cleaning table, the front doorto our beloved retreat, of course the keg 'o Killians, and last, but not the least, the legendary LAHC Buck Pole. |
|
Upon entering the kitchen area, we are all greeted by the head chef, John. Captain John is one of the finest cooks that will ever grace the camp kitchen
The next to greet all is Tom, beer in hand, looking for the apple pies.
Kent's brother and resident deer expert Dick is always on hand to share his "deer wisdom"
And as Denny and Todd relax after dinner, word of a card game are heard above the warm roar of the wood stove.
A friendly game of cards, Jim, Tom, Dick, and John play for the high stakes (and shots too)
The Cards, Booze and muchies continue......
Until the wee hours of the morning.....
And the first guy, usually Todd, to fall asleep is given the Royal treatment...
Soon other follow, among the chatter of card playin' fools
But, bright and early on opening day, Tom is ready at 4:00 AM (but why.......)
As the day wears on the deer keep rollin' in...
Here Jim and Mark stand next to the 5 point Paul missed....
Denny and a nice doe. No $50 fine this year
Tom and his Buck Pool Winner, shot between the eyes, by the chicken shack....
Most of the crew and a nearly full Buck
Pole With regard to "political correctness" I feel the buck pole should be renamed to...... Deer pole? well maybe not! |
|
Thanks again for the Great Hunt 2000 |
