Camp Barf SIGN-IN:

Jim could not make it this year because a wise career move had him stuck chasing terrorists at airports. We hope to see him in 2002.

The official Real-a-snake motto of the year was unanimously voted to be: "You can replace debt, but you can never replace time". This was quite appropriate as tidy sums and fortunes changed hands as the poker games began in earnest.

Once again Chief Cook and North Woods Chef extraordinaire, John, planned many lavish and healthy meals for this crew of mighty hunters. If fault were to be found at all, it would be that there was just too damn much good food!

The strategy sessions regarding the upcoming hunt usually lasted late into the night, causing some of the crew to become unstable on their feet and some even slightly queasy in their stomach. It was further learned that one should refrain from drinking the lake water as similar results were experienced.

Not much deer sign was discovered during scouting probes into the bush, but excitement, as always was at a fever pitch prior to the morning hunt. Two of the mighty hunters were so geeked, in fact they decided to try a new approach in fooling the wily whitetail deer: Tom and J.J. went out to the swamp at 1:00 a.m. to better blend with the woods, and become one with the surroundings (some kind of Zen thing I think).

After spending most of the night in the hunt-in-hut together, Tom decided to wander aimlessly around the swamp to try and locate the swamp blind for his opening day location. I want to take this time to say; LAHC has a diversity policy that accepts and appreciates the 'diversity' that those who live an alternative lifestyle can bring to a group.

Wednesday 11/15
Opening day was unbelievably warm! The morning was foggy, and in the forties. As the day progressed, the temps rose into the 60's. This weather kept the deer from moving, but did make it easier to sleep in our blinds. In spite of the warm weather, two of our group scored:

Tom (buck pool winner again!!!!!!!!!) got a nice spike out of the swamp.
Paul got a nice deer in the morning, and a nice spike in the evening from the '80'.

Thusday 11/16
The day dawned a little cooler, but still unseasonably warm. At about 11:00 a.m. we found out that our new neighbors to the north had decided to turn their hunting property into a shooting gallery slash ATV racetrack. This wise use of a resource promptly chased all remaining deer far from the swamp, so that those of us hunting that end of the property saw no deer and spent the day worrying about which way we should run!
Friday 11/17
The day was another beautiful, warm, clear and sunny day; another lousy day for hunting.

Dan got a doe at sunrise plus 1 minute. He was hunting at the fence just north of the new beaver dam. As a well-prepared hunter, Dan had everything needed to promptly field dress his deer. Dan quickly jumped to the task by exclaiming "hey Denny, you got a knife?".

There were no more deer seen or taken during the waning moments of Deer Camp 2001, which spoke glowingly of our efforts in quality deer management and habitat improvement.

Saturday was pack up and go home day so very little hunting was done. Even though not everyone got the chance to shoot a deer, we all got a chance once again to spend a few days with a good bunch of guys and to share a little of the fun and atmosphere that makes Deer Camp the thing we look forward to each year.

Until next year! Denny

Ahh, the familiar site of deer camp!

What is that hunk of rusting iron....oh..the planner.

It's 4:00 AM..do you know where your kids are?

Most of the gang was here, but Tom was takin' the picture, Kent was working, and Jim didn't make it. Did I miss anybody?
I found Denny in a tree.
Tom with the buck pool winner, I would have had him, but I refused to give away my money again!

Damn just my luck.

That's about it ladies, see ya in the spring for some plantings! thanks for the pics J.J.
