Mike's New Gun
Our Remington 597

Christmas 2004

Finally, I have my own rifle. It's a Remington 597. It's only a .22 caliber, but I plan to practice my hunting and shooting skills with it.

That's a Bushnel 3x9x40 zoom scope. I can almost see in the dark with it.

Paul wants his .308 back, so I saving up to buy a deer rifle this summer, for the fall hunt.

I couldn't wait to get to the range. I started at 25 yards to see if we're on the paper with the new scope. It only need a bit of tweaking, and I was drilling the center.

Except for a few jams, it shot nice. Then we had a major problem, a shell went off bad, and blew the clip apart BAH!.

Check this out, the casing rim blew right out. Now I see why they make us wear eye protection! We're sending the gun back to Remington for repair, or replacement. I can't believe a new gun would do that

We'll keep you posted on the progress.

UPDATE! Remington sent a brand new gun!

We went to the range at Bloom Lake to see what it does. It shoots great, we shot about 150 rounds when it happened again!

IT BLEW UP AGAIN! That's it, it's going back to Remington, we'll buy something else.

DON'T BUY REMINGTON ARMS PRODUCTS!

Okay, maybe that is a bit strong.

We spoke with the service director at Remington. He agreed the gun shouldn't blow up like this, and offered either another gun, credit toward a different model, or our money back.

I really like the feel of the 597, but I've lost my trust for it. To thier credit, Remington did honor my request to refund the purchase price of the gun, the ammo, and my shipping costs.

While the gun was a disaster, the actions of the company where acceptable.
