Let's Get Started

<- backindexnext ->
Friday June 26th, mid afternoon. We just closed, we're now the proud owners of this wreck! We have a week before the holiday to get started.

Wow, they really cleaned up in here. That sure is an ugly floor.

Hey, what happened to the milk can?
Yep, still ugly.
That's a dandy looking TV, I wonder if it works?
Let's open the door and get some fresh air in here. The roof sag has pinched the door, now I know why the seals broke.
The first thing to do is clear the debris so we can move out the trailer. Mom and Pop's brough a lawn mower.
We'd clear a little area, cut the grass. Most of the day was clear, cut, repeat.
Finally we had enough area cleared to try and move the trailer out.

I used my tractor to move it out. Between the tree, the pole, the barn and close property line, it was a VERY tight quarters to work in. .

It took us better part of 2 hours to get it out!

That's it, we're done for the day

June 27th, back at it. We need to peel the wall to see what's rotten.

There was a bee hive in the wall. It was those big, fat, thumb sized bees, and were they angry too!

Pops' wondering what what his kid bought. Do I see some rot on that big window?
We used the tractor to pull the deck away from the cottage. Now that's some serious rot! The sill plate is GONE! The rim joist is dust, but the floor joist ends are fairly stable.
Let's see how far this rot goes.
Ouch, I was afraid of that...
I guess we'll get started with the repairs. First, let's jack up the structure and see what we have to work with.
Cool, a floating cottage!
Out with the bad
And measure for some new stuff.
That's it, she's back on the foundation.
Now to take care of the rotten floor and bottom plate around the patio door.
Out goes the old door frame.
The rot extends under the rotten window too!
Okay, this is going to get ugly!

The floor rot extended under the kitchen cabinets.

A few minutes with the sledge, and the kitchen lowers are gone. Now we can get to the rotten stuff. We installed the window header to keep the roof up.
A little cleanup before we frame the new window.
Did I mention this place has a nice view? That's it for today, we'll be back at it tomorrow.
Good morning, we're almost ready for 8 feet of Andersen windows. We bough these used on Craigslist
First one in, that was easy.
Now let's get some siding on this place, it looks like rain!
That's a big tree! We contracted Joe's Tree Service to take down. To keep our cost down, we just had it dropped.

That roof hasn't seen sun in quite a while.

Oops, a bit of a problem. The doorwall we got on Craigslist is too tall for our walls. We had to install a header on the TOP of the wall.
We'll build a gable end to hide the beam, and give the front some style.
Did I mention the view?
We had to shovel the roof before we could cut it open.
We used hangers to carry the roof and ceiling joists to the new header.
It looks silly, but we're done for the night.
Back at it in the morning. Today is our last day of work before our company arrives for the holiday.
July 6th, Now it's starting to take shape. All it needs is a door wall? I think we're about done for now. The 4th of July weekend is over.
