A before shot of the kitchen. We ripped out the ceiling a few years ago to get to the upstairs bathroom plumbing (nice floor!)
So around the end of March 2001, Carol and the kids help me get ready for the tear up!
Wednesday: There goes the sink and the dishwasher to make room to work on the new window. Back to the stone ages! (paper plates work good)
We found a bargain with some 'RTA' cabinets (ready to assemble) what a deal, but you have to assemble them yourself! They are about 1/2 the price of the fully assembled cabinets!
We assembled one to see if our 'bargain' was a good thing? The wood is hickory with a nice satin finish.

We like the knots and mineral streaks in the wood, I hope they all look this good! It took about 30 minutes to assemble this one. With a little practice this could be about 15 - 20 minutes.(I hope, we have 24 more to assemble)

Thursday: We pulled up the beautiful flooring that has graced the estate since the late 70's.

All of the drywall is to come down this weekend, then the electrical and plumbing changes, and then we hang new drywall, yipeee!

Saturday: Now the fun really starts, remove all of the drywall Carol with the 'wonder bar' the favored tool of the weekend warrior!
The kids are gone, so we had to carry it outside. The kids love to rip down drywall, but they have to carry it out too.

That plumbing is under the plastic in the top pictures, it's been that way for a year now.

Sunday: Demolition Done!
Finally all of the drywall is out, the new lights and new outlets are in. As a bonus, with everything open we could run wires for our computer network to all of the rooms upstairs!

New ceiling drywall soon!!!

Monday: Picked up most of the drywall for the ceiling We borrowed a drywall lift, but we forgot the blocking for the soffits, so we stopped for the night (long day!)

What a joy it is to use a lift, instead of the 'Armstrong' method. *** Thanks Derrick and Janet ***

The kitchen is the last of the major construction. After that, we have just one more window to go! Hey maybe we should order that family room window now!, we have to repaint the adjoining wall anyway.

Lets go to Home Depot! So out with the patio door, and in with an Anderson awning window!
Will it ever end?

Tuesday: I left early today and finished up the ceiling, then a run to Home Depot for 15 more sheet of drywall.

Carol is cleaning a spot for breakfast. We have one wall done, 2 more to go!!

Our sink came in today, a stainless steel double bowl, made by Kindred of Canada

They discovered something new, a drainer board! hey, wasn't that an old idea?

Wednesday: Jenny was sick today, so I got a full day to hang more drywall. I finished hanging about 3:30, now the tape & mud, my favorite part.(not really)

We're getting close, I guess about 5 days before we're ready to paint (Tuesday)

We started to tape the seams tonight, not much, just enough to get a good start tomorrow. (the Redwings are winning)
Friday: I don't know if it looks any different, but I spent 9 hours taping and smearing stuff everywhere!!
Saturday: Another long day, smearing and sanding please say it look almost done! Sunday: same thing, bah it's Easter! Happy Easter to All
Sunday: Finally Sunday night, a coat of primer, now we're getting somewhere. Monday: Off to Johnson's for some breakfast!
Monday: Back from Johnson's and ready to work. We assembled 6 cabinets and temporarily mounted them in place, We used 1/2" plywood cut into 2" wide strips for the soffit construction. We stapled strips into 'L' sections for strength and a nailing surface
Tuesday: With a pneumatic stapler and wood glue, work went fast. We still need to frame over the sink for a light, and install our range hood. The plywood is great to work with, always straight, very strong, and never a knot. Try it!
Finished framing for the light, and installed the vent and electrical for the range hood. This model installs inside of the cabinet, so that only 2" shows outside. What a pain to install!

10:30 PM time for an adult beverage!
Tomorrow: More Drywall!
